Starting School Tips

Starting School TipsStarting school can be a nerve-wracking and daunting time for children and parents. But with a little preparation, the first day can be a day to remember for all the right reasons.

Read books about starting school together and chat about what happens in the story.

Talk about when you started school – what you enjoyed doing, who your friends were and anything funny that happened.

Talk with your child about what is likely to happen on their first day – you may have already visited the school on an open day. Re assure them that if they have any questions that the teacher will be happy to help them. It might be the smallest thing such as who they will sit with at lunchtime or where the toilets are that worries them the most.

If you are worried talk them over with a friend so your child doesn’t pick up on any tensions you may have.

On the first day

Do any preparation of uniform or lunch the night before.

Say goodbye with a smile and wave. If you feel upset try not to let your child see it.

If you child is distressed or clinging on try to leave them as quickly as possible. However, upset them may be most children will settle quickly when they are left. You can contact the school if you are concerned when you get home.

A few minutes wait can seem like hours to a young child, so when you collect your child make sure you arrive on time or a little early.
